Configuring a Dell Inspiron 8200 for RedHat 8.0

TOP Specs Log References

This details the steps necessary to configure a Dell Inspiron 8200 for Redhat 8.0, delivered on February 27, 2003.

This is a work in progress. I'm making changes every day.
The basic configuration is:

  • 2.4 Ghz CPU
  • NVIDIA GeoForce 4 AGP w/32MB RAM
  • 60 GB Drive
  • DVD/CD-RW
  • Background

I've been using UNIX systems since mid-1980's. I started with a VAX-780 running VMS and Eunice.

In 1988, I was a senior system administrator at a large research facility, responsible for the care and feeding of 2000 UNIX workstations. I also connected this research facility to the Internet, allowing 200,000+ people to have access to the Internet using mail and news.

    Purpose of this Dell Laptop

This Dell Laptop will have two functions

  • A personal workstation for development and personal use
  • A backup mailserver to replace/augment an aging IBM Thinkpad 385XD - in case it fails
